IT’S SO BEAUTIFUL!

Congratulations AdsoftheWorld.com the website is absolutely amazingly wonderfully goregous and MAN did that ever need to happen. I’m sure all my design geeks shed a single tear because I know I did, ehem, or no I didn’t….?

So i was printing my portfolio last week and I came across…

A GIANT TAMIL PROTEST. It was pretty amazing to see so many people being SO QUIET and calm. I have no idea what the hullaballoo the news made about the protest getting out of control, there were families and children and elderly all either sitting cross legged on the ground or standing chat or listening intently. I have to say it was the most tranquil protest EVER. I think you could have done yoga in the centre of the crowd and it would be no big deal. Everyone was super nice. I just don’t understand media perspectives sometimes. Much Ado about great people.

You know why? BECAUSE IT WAS BRIGHT ORANGE. and in the sunlight it was NEON. come on! love it. But on a more productive critical note, I like it because although its seemingly dry subject matter, its a little bit quirky in its tone, its likeable, without trying to hard that’s a difficult balance to obtain. Sometimes when you try too hard it becomes disingenuous but this one hit the spot.

Volvo spends a lot of money making a Volkswagen ad

Do car companies still have a lot of money to spend on flashy commercials anymore? This looks A LOT like something Volkswagen would’ve done circa 2000 when flashy was in. But now? It wasn’t very memorable, but what I do remember thinking is wow there goes a lot of money. I like the Sweden with love aspect, I just wish they would have done something funny with it, or something particularly swedish. I think its about owning what you say, and I don’t think they’ve achieved that.

and am surprised no one has done yet. Or at least I haven’t seen that yet. It’s so simple, makes you want to bang your head against a wall and say WHY DIDN’T I THINK OF THAT. Those are the kind of ads I love, and is the reason I love advertising, its the thrill of the chase. Chasing the ideas others bang their heads against the wall for. haha.

I am such a sap!

But I love this commercial to bits, the only thing that bothers me terribly is I can’t figure out if they enhanced the model’s eye colour, its so intense, it seems fake. I hope they didn’t but the rest is so pretty and soft and the song is so hauntingly romantic, check out the song’s video its totally twisted and creepy. If you like the happy romance, stick with the ad, if you’d like to see something kinda eery watch the music video for the song.

I usually despise those videos that try to translate Bollywood songs with English fake lyrics, because some of them are actually good songs, and because I can distinguish some of most of the words it’s insulting. Some of those are good songs, like Naach Punjabi!! Come onnn… BUT I MUST MAKE AN EXCEPTION HERE. I think this was one of the first one’s I’ve ever seen, and I laugh every time, I can’t help it, its stupidly funny. THE TORONTO-IST REALLY HATES THE VIRGIN SUBWAY SUICIDE ADS

“Mocking genuine tragedies (even via anthropomorphized objects) for the sake of an ad is inherently tactless, but doing so in a way that makes the people you want to impress appear callous and indifferent is just shooting yourself, in the foot.”

Them is fightin words! I understand that subways suicides are a sensitive subject, but is it really comparable to rape?! The toronto-ist thinks so. I feel like suicides subways are a terrible truth and has almost become part of this city’s culture, and yes its a delicate subject, but the ads weren’t showing people, they were showing toy radios! It’s like that IKEA commercial where the lamp gets left in the rain, oddly enough done by Zig as well, and the line is “you feel sorry for this lamp, that is because you’re crazy”…so what’s to be concluded?

I want to know what you guys think so let’s do this obama -style and have a vote!

Virgin Radio pulled its suicide based ad on account of TTC sensitivity. THIS I found 50% hilarious and 50% ridiculous. Thanks Mel for sending this to me. I love how the client was present throughout the entirety of the shoot and yet still reject it once completed. I understand the issue and can sympathize with the chairman, but on the same token I don’t think its fair to the creative team to undergo all the efforts involved, from brief to production, just hear SIKE!

I don’t like Amber Rose, does that make me a hater? She’s just another blonde girl with big boobs, only she shaved all her blonde hair off. Her peach fuzz is still blonde. Kudos to her for being part of kanye’s marketing schemes and being shameless about it. I guess everyone needs a monster just like them.

SEXXXY LAMPS

Art imitates life and form meets function with these adjustable, human-sized lamps by Daniel Loves Objects. Though they’re not available for purchase yet, the gold-plated cast metal mannequins-turned-lamps are a whimsical reminder that even the most everyday objects can break out of their mundane archetypes to take on new appearances.

The movable mannequins come in two sizes, 1.7 meters (approximately 5.5 feet) and .80 meters (approximately 2.6 feet), and can be tilted and turned at every joint. The Singapore-based designer behind the line says that by adjusting the angles to whatever is ideal at that moment, the lamp becomes a “translation of man’s inner thoughts and desires.” The subsequent results might be “controversial, provoking or elegant.”

A somewhat elusive individual who prefers to be recognized by his work than his full name, the designer, who also specializes in illustration and print design, conceptualizes his creations with an interactive aspect in mind. His goal is to endow the user with some form of remembrance as he or she relates with it. That said, consider these lamps unforgettable.

Alright not really. BUT OH MAN THAT WOULD BE AWESOME. I actually really like the Talk to Chuck Charles Schwab ads, I think out of all the financial logo based crap on CNBC I actually look forward to seeing these ones. One guy took it upon himself to spoof those ads and I think he did a fine job. Check it.

Sean Williams is Rocking my Cube

I don’t know who Sean Williams is, I’ve never met him personally, I don’t think we have any mutual friends. But one day he added me on facebook and it was love. He’s participating in the Nissan Hypercube contest, which uses social networking similar to the Doritos Guru campaign, which by the way will be announced April 27th. I honestly didn’t think people would participate in an ad-based social media campaign, but I guess for a good enough prize, its not that unlikely. I think what’s good is that as soon as the momentum gets started it’s hard to stop. I like that about social networking advertising, the excitement is created by the user and not the advertiser. Check out Sean Williams page on the Nissan Hypercube website, they are pretty funny. AND VOTE FOR HIM CUZ HE’S THE MAAAAN YEAH.

Hunger is such a little monster isn’t it? For me I think hunger is less cute and more spiky, vicious, and really annoying like a prepubescent teenager with an attitude problem. One idea for their next campaign might be to ask people to submit cartoons of what their hunger looks like. Check out McCann Erikson New York’s Hunger Monster:

I thought it would be the opposite since I’m not working, but never underestimate the power of filling time. I have part-time job as nanny to my beautiful 16-month niece. AND my parent’s house has never been cleaner. GOD I miss working. haha.

I wonder what the instructions were for this video? Okay everyone look as if we dragged you off Queen West dressed you at American Apparel and Urban Outfitters and dance without looking choregraphed? I have a lot of respect for Lil X I think he’s got wicked graphic sensibility but even his eye could not save this tragedy.

Addidas brings back the cool

Remember when Addidas tearaways were all you wanted to wear? Come on admit it, you did that. Well after seeing this ad I kinda wanna pull out my tearaways and wear them with pride and distinction. With cameos by basically anyone who makes any money in the music industry these days, this video is downright keeeewl. I also am in love with the track they used in the commercial which is “Beggin”-by Madcon.  WHICH I also will post so brush off your shell toes and enjoy!

I love the new RBC Insurance Ad

I could not for the life of me find a video file of the ad. But its the one where the kid asks his mom to borrow the car. She says yes because she knows she’s insured by RBC Car Insurance so she isn’t worried. He starts the car and crashes dramatically into the kitchen where she stands, which at that point the voiceover adds, while your here why not check out RBC Home Insurance as well. LOVE IT! Smart, clever, and sells two things as once.  It’s really simple so its definitely memorable. If anyone sees a youtube or embeddable file of the ad, please let me know and I’ll post it.

AKON knows nothing about beautiful women.

So Akon and Colby Odonis came out with a “club-banger” called “Beautiful”. It’s a cute song all about how beautiful this girl in club is which is a nice change to I love your booty will you ride me hard. BUT the funniest part of the video is that to me, none of these girls look very beautiful. In the effort to make the video look edgy and current they painted all the model’s faces with streaks of colour, reminiscent of Rio by Duran Duran. IT DOESN’T LOOK GOOD! I wish they would’ve showed a woman’s natural beauty in some way, and for once I was missing the whole spolighted beautiful girl in a club scene. The one time where I think they could get away with it and it be relevent. GAaaaaaaahhhh. Check it out:

Pantene makes yet another REAL commercial

NOT. Haha. But they did try their darndest to make it seem real? I love when Stacey London asks the model on a HUMONGOUS VIDEO SCREEN in an all white room to tell her what her experience was with the product. After she says how frizzy her hair gets in humidity she poses with her hands on her face with a perfect curl falling into her face. Which is the realest of the real women right. Don’t we all look like that when we’re talking about shampoo. Oh hilarity. Excuse me let me go turn my wind machine off.

MARVIN SCANDRICK is not slim anymore

112 is now just Marvin “Slim” Scandrick, who should really reconsider that nickname. Poor guy. What the eff happened to 112 they were a good R & B band at one point? When I saw this ad the other day I made a note of it. I wrote, I feel uncomfortable and awkward. I like the whole snippet of an ad idea. Milk does this really well, in under three seconds we get what they are trying to say without the whole long story. If you do it right, it works, but I think the humour gets lost when you insert creepy British voiceover man.

What the Hollerin and a Hootinanny is up with this writing?! I wanted so much to like this ad. I tried my darndest, but wow did it ever go wrong. All the elements were right, casting was good, set design was okay, lighting was good. And I was with them until the 0:21 mark where it all went wrong. WHAT’S WITH THE HAND! WHY. The writing couldn’t stand on its own? And oh God the clencher was the “I knew it at the end”, terrible. just awful.

Graham Lee & David Crichton GET HAPPY WITH Q107

I think there’s gonna be some flack that follows these ads, but I kinda dig em. I like the art direction, the typography is a nice touch. I saw the tv spot the other day with the guys coming out of a full body cavity search laughing their butts off and I thought hmm.. kinda interesting. No its not the most shocking situational creative ever, but I think its pretty good.
